Sandra Bullock won an Oscar for her role as Mrs. Leigh Ann Tuohy in the movie “The Blind Side”. Shortly thereafter, she was blindsided with the shocking revelation that her husband, Jesse James, had an extra-marital affair with some tattoo artist. Since this blockbuster news made the headlines, Sandra Bullock has moved out of her home and has not been seen, or heard from. Even her publicist offers no comments!
Having worked with women who have suffered the betrayal, indignity, humiliation and embarrassment that goes hand-in-hand with the revelation that your husband has been unfaithful to you – most women cannot seek solace by going underground. Many women have expressed to me their desire to hide from the world once they find out their husband’s have engaged in an extra-marital affair; but these woman cannot disappear. Although I have heard this expression many times: “I wish I could just crawl into a hole” I can’t. I have to go to work, or take my kids to school and their activities or go grocery shopping to get food for my family, etc.
The point of this blog is that most women who have had to deal with the heart-breaking blow of infidelity (after all, we all know husbands cheat – but no one ever believes it will be their husband) do not have the luxury of hiding from the world to seek solace. In some ways I wish they could. It would give these women who have experienced the ultimate breach of trust some very needed time to re-group, get a hold of themselves and then decide whether they want to take on the possible, although what initially seems overwhelming task of trying to put their marriage back together.
